Democracy Ateneo

A project of Universidad de la Tierra Califas, the Democracy Ateneo is an open space for reflection and action that focuses on the vexed and incomplete project of democratic promise by exploring at least four critical themes: a) projects that historically and politically undermine democracy  (e.g., democratic despotism, development, neoliberalism, and (global) prison industrial complex); b) projects that attempt to democratize mainstream liberal institutions in the areas of education, local government, health, environment, and food; c) autonomous alternatives to representative democracy (e.g., Zapatistas subversion of the party-state system, opposition to the Fourth World War, and experiments with a politics of encounter);  d) the strategies, practices, and formations that promote the production of a collective subject. Each gathering of the Democracy Ateneo will be facilitated by collectively generating questions and points of reference that emerge from local struggles.
